The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, struck early and received five RBI from Romulo Ruiz to beat the Schaumburg Boomers 9-3 on Thursday night at Boomers Stadium.
The CornBelters wasted no time getting on the board as the first four hitters reached base with five runs scoring on five hits. Romulo Ruiz hit a bases-loaded triple and sacrifice flies by David Medina and Santiago Chirino for the five RBI.
The Boomers scored their first two hitters of the game to cut the deficit to 5-2 after one inning as Gerard Hall led off with a triple followed by a walk to Frank Pfister. Hall scored on a single by Chad Mozingo while Pfister scored on a passed ball.
Schaumburg added a run to cut the Belters lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Ty Nelson doubled with one out, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a balk.
The Belters added to the lead in the fifth inning with a lead-off double by Mike Schwartz, who scored on Pat McKenna's league-leading fourth triple for a 6-3 lead. Ruiz collected his fourth and fifth RBI with a home run to left center that scored McKenna and gave the Belters an 8-3 lead.
Normal extended the lead to 9-3 in the eighth when David Medina and Keoni Manago led off with singles, and Medina scored on an errant relay throw on a double play attempt.
Jose Trinidad improved to 3-0 with 6.1 innings of work for the win while Boomers starter Joe Parsons (1-1) took the loss.
The CornBelters return to the Corn Crib for games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the River City Rascals. The series opener is CEFCU Fireworks Friday with a Hollywood theme.
