The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, could not counter an offensive surge from the Schaumburg Boomers in a 12-5 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.
The CornBelters scored in the first inning thanks to a lead-off single from Mike Schwartz, who was driven in by a triple to the right field corner by Pat McKenna. A fielder's choice ground ball by Steven Felix scored McKenna to give the Belters a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
The Boomers took a 3-2 lead with some help from the Belters in the second inning. Steve McQuail was hit by a pitch and Brian McConkey walked to lead off the inning, and both scored when Belters pitcher Tyler Lavigne threw wildly on Michael Demperio's sacrifice bunt attempt. Demperio took third on the play and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left by Sean Mahley.
Schaumburg added a run in the third to lead 4-2 as Frank Pfister led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian McConkey.
The Belters got a run back in the fourth with a lead-off single by David Medina, who went to third after Jenzen Torres was hit by a pitch and a Santiago Chirino single, then scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by T.J. Gavlik.
The Boomers added to the lead in the fourth when the first two hitters walked and scored on Pfister's second double of the game to take a 6-3 lead and end the afternoon for Lavigne.
Schaumburg added three runs to increase the lead to 9-3 with a two-out rally in the fifth including a two-RBI single by Frank Pfister.
The Boomers continued the scoring in the sixth when McQuail led off the inning by striking out but reaching base as the pitch got away, followed by a McConkey single. Both scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Michael Demperio to build the hosts lead to 11-3 after six innings. A two-out RBI single by Sean Mahley in the seventh extended the hosts' advantage to 12-3.
The CornBelters re-entered the scoring column when two walks to lead off the eighth came around to score thanks to a T.J. Gavlik base hit and a bases-loaded walk to Pat McKenna to cut the deficit to 12-5.
Cody Griebling (1-1) threw six innings for the win while Lavigne (1-2) took the loss.
The brief road trip concludes with a 6:30 p.m. Thursday first pitch at Boomers Stadium.
