Normal CornBelters VS Frontier Greys
Sun May 26, 2013 - 6:00 PM
The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, threw matching one-hitters and swept the Frontier Greys in a Sunday doubleheader at the Corn Crib by scores of 4-0 and 2-0.
In the opener, the Belters scored first as Jenzen Torres collected his first hit with the team, a two-run home run just over the left field fence. The Belters pushed the lead to 3-0 in the same inning when Santiago Chirino walked, stole second and third and scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by David Remedios.
The CornBelters added a run in the third to increase the lead to 4-0 thanks to a lead-off walk to Mike Schwartz, who went to third on a base hit and scored during a double play.
Ryan Demmin (1-0) earned the complete-game seven-inning win with a one-hitter. Greys starter Sean Hille (0-1) took the loss.
In the nightcap, pitchers ruled until the fifth inning when the CornBelters finally broke into the scoring column. Santiago Chirino registered the first Normal hit with one out, moved to second on a fielder's choice when a comebacker to the mound was thrown wide on a double play attempt and scored on a single to center by T.J. Gavlik. Steven Felix added an insurance run with a line drive home run to right in the sixth inning.
Drew Provence (1-0) tossed a complete-game seven-inning one-hitter to match the opener for the win. Tyler Vaske (0-2) gave up only three hits in his 5.2 innings but took the loss.
The CornBelters take Monday off before a three-game series at Schaumburg beginning on Tuesday. The Belters then come home next weekend for a three-game series against the River City Rascals.
