Normal CornBelters Ink Two More
Nov 7, 2012

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, have signed catcher/infielder Jenzen Torres and re-signed left-handed pitcher Jacob Liedka. They have now signed four players in the past two months. The CornBelters will play their first home game of the 2013 season at The Corn Crib on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. versus the Windy City ThunderBolts.
“Jenzen has an exceptional offensive game, and he’s very versatile defensively,” said Player Personnel Director Nick Belmonte. “We feel he’ll help us win in a variety of ways.”
Playing with the Hawaii Stars of the independent North American Baseball League (NABL), Torres hit .276 with eight hits, eight RBI and two home runs in 2012. Due to a season-ending injury, he only played in eight games for the Stars. Prior to starting his professional career, he was a standout at Cal Poly Pomona of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). As a senior (2012), he hit .301 with 52 hits, 40 RBI and a team-high eight home runs. He was selected to the First Team All-CCAA Baseball Team.
Last season was Liedka’s second with the CornBelters. He was 2-13 with a 5.15 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 118.2 innings pitched. He appeared in 23 games, started 16 of them and posted a team-high two complete games. In 2011, he was 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
“Jacob is a key arm on our staff,” said Belmonte. “He was a free agent, and it was important we get him back in the mix with Brooks Carey. He pitched well with Brooks back in 2011.”
