06/12/2018 10:46 PM -

Normal, Illinois (June 12, 2018) – The (11-15) Normal CornBelters dug themselves into too big of a hole after the (16-12) Lake Erie Crushers scored eight runs in the second to take the series opener 12-2 on Tuesday night.

Prior to the series opener against the Lake Erie Crushers, the CornBelters added three new players in LHP George Faue, RHP Chris Weiss, and INF Brandon Kussmaul along with activating catcher Cody Erickson and placing outfielder Tony Holton on 7-day disabled list.

At the plate, Normal was highlighted by Derrick Loveless who kept his league-leading (26) on-base streak with a single to center to leadoff the fourth. The CornBelters salvaged their first run of the game in the seventh. Chris Iriart reached on an error by an error from the Crushers shortstop. A fielder’s choice later was followed by an RBI single up the middle by Erickson. The Belters got their final run of the game in the ninth after Ryan Dickt walked then scored on fielder’s choice off the bat of Sam Vega.

Heading into tonight’s game Jacinto Garcia was second in the league with a 1.96 ERA, but the righty struggled with his command on the mound. He only lasted 1.2 innings and surrendered seven earned runs along with five walks. The former Hofstra Pride, Chris Weiss made his Normal debut and got out of the second inning to end the Lake Erie damage.

One of three players from Northern Illinois University, George Faue made his Belter debut in the third. After being reactivated from the DL, Cody Erickson helped out his new teammate. For the first out, Erickson made a leaping catching a few steps in front of the warning track. Then on the next pitch, he fully extended towards the leftfield line and made a diving catch for out number two.

Brandon Kussmaul the third new Belter also made his debut when he took over second base for Justin Fletcher in the seventh.

Trevor Simms and Mark Hendricks came in to finish the eighth and ninth. The eight-run second was too much for Normal, they look to bounce back and take game two tomorrow with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
